Andrew Thompson
Golden, Cashel, Co Tipperary
Andrew Thompson farms in partnership with his 93-year-old cousin Audrey in County Tipperary. The farm is located in the scenic landscape of Golden outside Cashel.
Andrew is from a strong farming background and his Dad and brother run a nearby dairy and tillage farm which was bought by his Great Great Grandfather in 1793.
Andrew rears Irish Angus cattle and sheep and breeds race-horses, a number of which have gone on to have great racing careers. One of those is European Champion winner, Ribchester, who now stands in Kildangan Stud.
He chose to breed Irish Angus because of their temperament. “Irish Angus are very placid and quiet. They are a really nice animal to work with and never cause any hassle which is a great benefit.
Our fields are full of clover and the cattle and horses just love it. Irish Angus are natural foragers and the find all of the clover and devour it! I think that’s what makes their meat so tasty.”
Biodiversity is hugely important on Andrew’s farm and he maintains the hedge rows on his farm to a really high standard, planting new hedgerows each year.
